A good player understands the rules of the game, demonstrates skill, uses strategy, works for the success of the team, and practices good sportsmanship.

A good game is challenging, yet understandable. It has layers of complexity or challenge that make it engaging for players of varying ability levels. A good game includes lots of potential variations and allows opportunities for innovation. A good game promotes skill development and growth.

I agree that a good game must be challenging enough and varying enough to accommodate different levels. I like your comment about the variations. I wonder though if variations impact the rules. How set in stone are the rules?

When I was young and played with other children in the neighborhood, we constantly changed the rules in order to make the game fun and fair. This kept everyone engaged. If the game isn't fun or fair then other players leave and the game is over. I key element of a good game is that it encourages continued play.

Hi Bob-
I totally agree with your definition of a good player, especially the part about working for the success of the team. If children "get that" part of play, they will be successful in any group activities and should even take it into adulthood in their career.
