Firefox 3:
Go to Firefox->Preferences->Applications
Either scroll through the list or search for the "Content Type" that's not behaving correctly. In this specific case we're looking for "PDF" or "Portable Document Format".
To the right of the proper Content Type is an "Action" pull-down menu.

If you know which application you want to always use to handle this content type, select it from the pull-down menu. In this specific case, the best application to use is "Preview".
If the application you want to use is not already in the list, you can choose "Use Other ..." which will bring up a dialogue box so you can find and select the proper application on your computer. In this specific case, Preview is located in the Applications folder of the hard drive.
If you know you may want to use different applications at different times, you can choose "Always Ask". In this specific case, this would allow you to choose between Preview (quicker) or Acrobat Reader (more options) each (and every) time firefox delivers this type of content.
If you know that most of the time you will want to save this kind of content, you can choose "Save File". If you select this, you will also need to go to the Main tab of preferences to check your Download settings. You can set it to always save files to a preferred location (your desktop or your server folder), or to "Always Ask" so you will be presented with a "Save As ..." dialogue box each (and every) time.
