The choice of activity definitely depends on the type of thinking that teh assessment requires.
For simple memorizing of vocabulary I use something like quia flashcards. This level f activity is at the bottom of Bloom's taxonomy (Remembering), but it does the trick for the task at hand.
I have used Build Your Wild Self for a variety of activities and levels of Bloom's taxonomy. Students have used it to analyse their creatures, to apply Spanish and French adjective order and agreement, to create detective stories, and to simply translate from English to the target language.
