THESIS ESSAY – Write in complete sentences and 4 separate paragraphs [introductory paragraph is provided; YOU WRITE three supporting paragraphs and one concluding paragraph], in detail with examples, in your journal. (40 points):

Exam #1 Thesis Essay -- Religion in the Ancient Fertile Crescent

The Fertile Crescent region of the ancient world (which includes today's Mideast nations) was the first society in which religious monotheism emerged, in the ancient nation of Israel. The differences between polytheism and monotheism were not simply the idea of many gods versus just one god, although that was the most obvious difference. Monotheists viewed their single God as (1) spiritual, not having a physical form, and with no name; (2) as being all powerful, rather than having limited special powers; and (3) as a God for all people and as a God who could not be controlled or manipulated, not as tribal gods representing and fighting for only one nation and subject to control or manipulation.

Topic sentence #1 for the first supporting paragraph: The earliest human societies believed that gods possessed physical bodies, either human, animal or a mix of both, and had individual names, while monotheists believed their God was spiritual and had no name.

Topic sentence #2 for the second supporting paragraph: Early human societies viewed gods as having specific, limited powers, unlike monotheists who saw their God as all-powerful.

Topic sentence #3 for the third supporting paragraph: Early societies viewed their gods as tribal, representing and fighting for their nation over others and able to be controlled and manipulated, while monotheists came to see their God as a God for all and one that could not be controlled or manipulated.

Restatement of the thesis for the concluding paragraph: Human beings' view of gods and their role in human society changed dramatically as monotheism replaced polytheism.
