Read pages 360-363 in textbook chapter 10 ("Reconstruction") and answer the following questions:

1. What were the parts of President Andrew Johnson's plan to restore the Union at the end of the Civil War (1865)?

2. What were the "Black Codes"?

3. Upset by the Black Codes and the election of former Confederate leaders to Congress, the Republican Party (which controlled the majority of seats in the Congress) ignored President Johnson and developed their own plan for rebuilding the Union. This plan included 3 main goals:

4. Why do you think so many white Southerners were opposed to the 14th Amendment?
